On parenting, (spring) breaking, and service

Ohhhh. What a week. What a week. Jaden had a few meltdowns. Mom narrowly escaped meltdown induced meltdowns! The worst night was Tuesday, when of course we had company. The floor got stomped, the bathroom garbage dumped out, and it sounded like toys were being used as projectiles during time outs. There was arguing and a lot of negotiation attempts, but we made it. And then Spring break started on Wednesday at noon and our week got better. We were lucky enough to spend part of Thursday and Friday with my darling niece Maddie. Since she still calls me Aunt Mandy, I've decided that she is still my niece, not former niece bleh! We went to Gnomeo and Juliet in 3D. Loved it. Especially the gnome in the mankini and Elton John music. We hit Chuckee Cheese. It took about 20 minutes to spend $10 worth of tokens. I practiced my deep breathing and other coping skills and managed to leave unscathed by the overstimulation! Haha. Then we spent time with Mark and went hot tubbing before the storms blew snow and frigid temps in. It was a gorgeous night and we all had a great time. We went home and to sleep watching Fantastic Mr. Fox and woke up to make Strawberry smoothies. We did some budget shopping and got two pairs of Heely's at Good Will. Maddie is amazing on hers. Jaden is getting the hang of it. Picture this: Jaden and Maddie wheeling around Ross, sweeping the floor with a hot pink broom as they roll around! Maddie spotted the coolest pink butterfly and flower broom. I HAD to have it. Then she and Jaden used it as a support as they wheeled and heeled. Kind of the equivalent of training wheels or the small walker they have at ice skating rinks. We drove out to Belfry and ate Nutella and graham crackers. Mmmm. I took Thursday off so I got a brief respite from the intensity of working with teenage girls in residential treatment!
The lesson during Relief Society at church today was about service. I kept thinking about how parenting is a constant demand requiring endless service. And it can be such a thankless job! Jaden does a good job of telling me that he loves me. But most of the work of motherhood tensd to go unnoticed. All the feeding, reading, teaching, chauffering, cleaning, assisting in hygiene and clothing, getting to bed, getting up, getting out with everything, getting in with everything...it's a lot. And of course providing limits and discipline is not a service children thank their parents for...at least not when they're six!
